Inside Kandahar's Secret School For Girls

June 5, 2010 on Al-Jazeera English
The Taliban has waged a violent campaign against girls who go to schools in their Afghan strongholds.

A series of attacks against schools and female students have driven many girls to go underground to receive an education.

In one attack in Kandahar in 2008, around 15 girls and teachers were sprayed with acid by men on motorbikes.

  1. Parents and students here provide a reminder what the term "hero" actually designates, for Americans who have oversused and overapplied the term to near-meaninglessness.

  2. Good thing some of those americans (+soldiers and civilians from several other nations) helped make that school possible, huh?

  3. These muslims are so afraid of women that it is almost a miracle they can procriate.

  4. I really can not imagine what it would be like to go to school under threat of violence and death and then seriously be able to focus on my studies.  These women are to be admired for knowing what is right in the face of oppression.  And that they are willing to move themselves into harms way for their education.

I wish there was more that I could do other than observing their struggle...

  5. Who knows? Perhaps once these girls get out of class they wave american flags and sing "god bless America."

  6. I'm at a loss for words. This is simultaneous depressing and inspiring.
