Wolf Blitzer Asks Atheist Tornado Survivor If She 'Thanks The Lord'

CNN's Wolf Blitzer unknowingly asks an atheist tornado survivor if she "thanks the Lord" for her family's safety.

"We're happy you're here. You guys did a great job," Blitzer said to Rebecca Vitsmun, who escaped from her house with her 19-month-old son right before the twister tore through it. "You've gotta thank the Lord, right? Do you thank the Lord for that split-second decision?"

Vitsmun hesitates for a moment and smiles. "I -- I'm actually an atheist," she said, laughing off the awkward moment.

"You are. All right. But you made the right call," Blitzer said.

"We are here, and I don't blame anyone for thanking the Lord," Vitsmun said.

14-Year-Old Activist, Peace Prize Winner Shot by Taliban

October 9, 2012 on CNN:
Malala Yousufzai's courageous blogging against the Taliban set her apart from other 14-year-old Pakistani girls.

Growing up in a region once dominated by the Islamic extremists, she knew the fear associated with the word Taliban.

One of her fears came to pass Tuesday, when gunmen sought her out and opened fire on her school van, leaving her seriously wounded along with two other classmates.

Allegations of Child Sex Abuse Cover-up in Ultra Orthodox Jewish Communities

June 18, 2012 on CNN:
Areas of Brooklyn, New York feel like a trip back in time. Ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities live a lifestyle that mirrors their ancestors from centuries ago. The dress, hair, language, education, food, values, prayers, traditions and community structure have been passed down and preserved through many generations and across oceans. All of those are an expression of the residents’ profound faith in God.

What is not visible are shameful secrets: Child sex abuse scandals have been making headlines for years and bringing unwanted attention to a group bent on privacy.

For Hasidim, every waking act is defined by the laws of the Torah; they depend on the teachings of rabbis to guide them in all parts of their day. Influence from the secular world threatens to invade their insular community.

Now revered leaders of the community are accused of protecting child predators and punishing the victims who dare to speak out about what was done to them, all to avoid outside involvement.

CNN - Bible Condemns A Lot, Why Focus On Homosexuality?

June 22, 2011 on CNN
Belief Blog's guest post yesterday arguing that gay marriage foes are imposing their own values on the Bible, rather than drawing on genuine biblical truth, fetched over 2,000 comments.

A number of commenters suggested that the writer, a recent Yale Divinity School grad, is an elitist who's out of touch with common interpretations of the Bible.
