1. It's all a bit silly but made even sillier by Fox's "IS THERE ANY WAY THIS IS NOT ALLOWED?" analysis.

  5. Gaaaahhhhhh!!!! That one girl "how can you compare that to the word of god?" is so infuriating.

Why do bible-believers keep calling it the "word of god"??? That dishonesty pisses me off so much because even if you believed the bible, it still always refers to god in the third-person. At no point does the bible claim to have been actually written by god. It is presented as if it was written by human authors witnessing god, NOT as if it was the word of god. You don't have to disbelieve the bible to realize it's not honest to call it the word of god. Just believe what's actually written there and that's enough.

Actually, I do know why they do this - it's because they want portray those who criticize the honesty of the human authors as if they were hubristically criticizing the honesty of god.

I think this is hilarious. I've had a couple atheist friends say that this is bad exposure for us and that being asses never got us any supporters. Yeah because no one likes Hitchens or Dawkins. *rolls eyes* Their smugness and ability to articulate exactly what they mean = entertainment value and thus gets people interested. Porn for bibles is hilarious and humor gets people's attention and catches their interest.

  7. Apparently jesusfetusfajitafishsticks and other atheists don't give two s***s about being tactful or having having integrity. Exposure is apparently all that matters to some people. Seriously, f*** this type of atheism. I'm with the wacko religious nuts on this one.

@Andrew, what is the problem with this type of atheism? There are tons of different "types" and they all play an important role at bringing more people to our side. You don't think so?

Most Christians belive Jesus was god and his words were recorded in the bible so i would dissagree with your critique.

  10. I am LOOOOVING THIS campaign!! And I am almost loving that it chides the uptight atheists among us like Andrew and Hemant Mehta even more! You're right random christian kid, it basically is 'just offending people' and that's A GOOD THING because your beliefs are harmful and they deserve offending.

  11. While I think it's quite funny and the "smut for smut" line is quite clever, I don't think comparing religious texts to pornography is particularly useful. I don't really have any problem morally with pornography... maybe I'm not looking at it the right way?

I think overall I like the sound of the campaign more than I like the sound of the group - "Atheist Agenda" just doesn't sound right for some reason. What IS the atheist agenda, exactly?

  12. I wish they had a "Decent Books for Holy Books" campaign that passed out classics in exchange for holy books and hell, even religious brochures like the Watchtower.

  13. Brilliant! there are major differences between porn and the bible though... in porn you dont find circumcised women and the ladies might actually enjoy themselves from time to time :)

maybe the porn given can be based on your favorite biblical story? they'll have to stock up on snuff films for that...

  14. I wonder what they are going to do with all the smutty religious texts that they collect? Disposing of that trash might get some crazy person really upset. Do they need to treat the garbage with respect? Or would it be cool to throw it in a pig pen and piss on the pile?

Do we atheists need to show respect for the delusions of religious people or are we just encouraging their lazy intellects?

  15. My 17 yr old son put it this way, "Dad, I'm an atheist, not an anti-theist. I'm not against anyone and I don't want anyone against me." So, while trading "holy" books for porn is kinda funny, it does has a touch of juvenile delinquency to it.

  16. to be honest this is stupid its only going to piss off religious people and show them that atheists are trash...stupid campaign- what happened to teaching philosophy and logic? The big beef with religion is that people believe without thinking- and WOW so much thinking results from handing out porn- although i like the "i know my porn comment" lool

  17. funny, but i don't think it's particularly helpful in the long run

  18. The reason I am against this campaign is simple, it lacks integrity. If the campaign openly stated that there was nothing wrong with porn, then fine. If it passed out some other reading material that was educational or enlightening, then that would also be fine. However, passing out pornography and then simultaneously claiming that you don't advocate porn is disingenuous and it gives the moral and intellectual high ground to the opposition. This was poorly done.

What does this have to do with morality? Do you think porn is immoral? They're attempting to make a point with the porn implying that the bible is more obscene than playboy... this point would not be made with educational materials... nor would it attract very much attention. Controversy and humor are both useful tools in getting people interested. There's no denying that.

Also, someone above asked what they did with the bibles they got... they kept a few for themselves and donated others to bookstores.

  21. For those who believe this is "just offensive" and not a good message... The reason it is probably called "Atheist Agenda" is because they want to bring attention to their only message:

You disagree with porn? Then you will sure as hell disagree with your own holy text!

The point is exposing the texts, not offending the religious... although it gets them international coverage, and plenty of extra support. It only seems juvenile if you see it as a childish ploy to offend people, when they use it as a platform for speaking to them (according to their blog link given under the video). And speaking to the religious leads to educating the religious. I support this, as long as the message is clear, they have nothing to be offended by.

  22. Porn is not smut...
