Hardball: Gay Activist Mike Rogers vs. Rev. Eugene Rivers

December 23, 2008
PageOneQ.com's Mike Rogers appears with conservative minister Eugene Rivers on MSNBC's Hardball. The topic is the divisive nature of pastor Rick Warren to perform the invocation at the inauguration. Rivers says Warren is not divisive, a claim Rogers debunks immediately by noting that the controversy brought the two on television to discuss it.

Capitol Controversy

Link
At this season of the Winter Solstice may reason prevail. There are no gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell. There is only our natural world. Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds. That's what the Madison-based Freedom from Religion Foundation put up this holiday season in the marble hallways of the State Capitol in Olympia, Washington between the Senate and House chambers. The placard stands next to a giant xmas tree (a pagan symbol that has become associated with the Christian holiday) and a traditional nativity scene. This gesture symbolizes the very controversial topic of religion's role in the U.S. Joshua Johnson Reports.

Westboro Baptist Church: Santa Claus Will Take You to Hell

BBC: Pope Angers Gay Groups

December 23, 2008
The Pope was attacked by lesbian and gay campaigners after he declared that saving humanity from homosexual or transsexual behaviour was as important as saving the rainforests from destruction.

He said humanity needed to listen to the "language of creation" to understand the intended roles of man and woman and that behaviour beyond traditional heterosexual relations was a "destruction of God's work".

He called on the Church to protect man from the "destruction of himself" saying that tropical rainforests deserved protection but man as a creature "does not deserve any less". Read more

Richard Dawkins explains his 'Scarlet A' lapel pin

Josh Timonen: During the filming of Channel 4's "The Genius of Charles Darwin," Richard Dawkins sat down with 3 women who are using sperm banks to have children. I've been editing down the raw footage for our upcoming "Uncut Interviews" DVD, and noticed this little exchange in-between takes when someone's cell phone rings. Richard explains his "Scarlet A" lapel pin. I just thought it was a fun little bit to share. You can get more information about The Out Campaign at OutCampaign.org and if you want an 'A' lapel pin like Richard's, you can get one here.

This World: Forced to Marry | BBC Documentary

Play all videos (6)
Aired: December 1, 2008 on BBC 2
Saira Khan investigates the dramatic stories of British Asians taken to Pakistan by their parents and forced to marry against their will. With exclusive access to the Government's Forced Marriages Unit and its office in Islamabad, the programme follows the dramatic rescues of young women in remote rural communities in Pakistan.

For reasons of immigration, honour, money and family ties, some British Pakistani parents insist their children marry cousins and will ignore their wishes. If girls refuse they face being cut off from their families or worse. With the government introducing new powers to try and stop the practice, Saira Khan asks why in the 21st Century the forced marriages still happen.

Unreported World | Venezuela: Cult of the Thugs

Play all videos (3)
Aired: November 21, 2008 on Channel 4
Unreported World reveals how Venezuelans are increasingly turning to a mystical cult that worships the spirits of dead Robin Hood-style gangsters as they seek supernatural protection from a crime wave that the police seem unable to contain.

Reporter Nima Elbagir and producer James Brabazon join thousands of pilgrims on the slopes of Quibayo mountain as they converge for a mass "spiritist" ceremony- the holiest night of the year for a religion that seeks the protection of local gods and invokes the healing powers of ancestral spirits.

But the team discovers that adherents of spiritism have turned gangster-ism into an act of veneration, legitimising violent criminals with the trappings of mainstream religious belief. Murder is so commonplace that infamous gangsters are invoked not as criminals - but saviours.

Crowd Rallies Against Atheist Sign At State Capitol

December 7, 2008
OLYMPIA, Wash. - An estimated crowd of several hundred people flocked to the state Capitol for a Sunday protest against a holiday display that disparages religion and claims there is no God.

The display - a "winter solstice" sign sponsored by the atheistic Freedom from Religion Foundation - calls religion "myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds."

State officials had allowed the anti-religion placard to be displayed during the holidays at the Capitol, along with a Christian nativity scene and a decorated Christmas tree, in response to a lawsuit filed over seasonal religious displays on state property. Read more

Muslim Pilgrims Stone Satan at the Hajj; All Sins "Forgiven"

December 8, 2008
MINA, Saudi Arabia (AFP) — Thousands of Muslim pilgrims massed in a valley near the Saudi holy city of Mina on Monday for the stoning of Satan, the last and most dangerous rite of the annual hajj.

Hundreds of people have been trampled to death in stampedes which have blighted several previous pilgrimages to Islam's holiest sites when the faithful rush to hurl stones at huge pillars symbolising the devil.

To complete the ritual, a pilgrim must throw 21 pebbles at each of three 25-metre (82-foot) pillars and this year the faithful are being given pebbles in pre-packed bags to spare them the effort of searching for the stones. Read more

Muslim Cleric Presents "Scientific" Proof that Women Cannot Talk and Remember Simultaneously

October 23, 2008 on Iqra TV (Saudi Arabia)
From transcript:
Abd Al-Majid Al-Zindani: Allah said, with regard to women bearing witness: "If two men are not available, then a man and two women, such as you choose as witnesses, so that if one of them errs, the other can remind her." Some heretics communists and other atheists ridiculed [this verse], saying: How come a man's testimony equals that of two women? They used this to mock [the Muslims]. The Muslims used to respond that women are subject to menstruation, when their endurance and mental capacity for concentration are diminished. When a woman witnesses a killing or an accident, she becomes frightened, moves away, and sometimes even faints, and she cannot even watch the incident.
