October 27, 2010 on Radio Netherlands Worldwide:
The northern Dutch province of Friesland has the highest density of churches in Europe. But the number of worshippers is falling, and this is creating financial problems for the churches. As a result, 100 of the province's 700 churches are going to have to close.
As a dutch atheist, I wouldn't want to see all of these churches demolished. Many of these are old, historical buildings, and they're part of Frysian culture.
ReplyDeleteFriesland is something of a country within a country. They have their own language and their own culture, and it would be a shame if that culture would be completely destroyed.

ReplyDeleteAgreed.
ReplyDeleteWhatever we think of religion, these church's are a part of our human history and culture - I hope they are able to save at least one per village.
turn them into community centres or libraries.
ReplyDeleteKeep a couple of them as examples to the young of just how persuasive well marketed religious nonsense can motivate people, as a warning. Some of the church buildings look quite nice. Given Holland is a physically small nation, not much land, perhaps the church land could be put to productive use for the first time in centuries and converted to farmland.
ReplyDelete"...or half-way houses for alcies..yuk yuk, har-har ..'burp'..."
ReplyDeleteYeah. We teach people hatred and superstition, in return the government should use tax money to keep our facilities running.
ReplyDeleteGo suck every dick in China.
Why 1 per village? Not every village has an art museum or science museum, why have a religious museum in each?
