1. No atheists in foxholes? That's because they are shot in the back by their American Christian compatriots.

  2. I'm sure there's also an informal "don't ask don't tell" policy in which soldiers don't feel comfortable stating their atheism when everyone else around them takes christianity very seriously.

  3. What a bunch of shit! I bet he also thinks there are no Christian is stip clubs. I know your in Iraq but that doesnt mean you have to shove your head in the sand.

  4. As a former Marine and Vietnam vet, I'' tell you that anyone who thinks there are no atheists in fosholes has never been in one. These news punks leave when the shooting starts.

  5. Retired Army officer and foxhole atheist here. That chaplain is a prime example of why we need to drop the Chaplains Corps and embed them like we do reporters. If they're going to spout ignorant, self-serving crap like that, I'd rather they not be wearing a uniform while doing it. It's not like chaplains contribute anything when the bullets are flying - he was probably cowering in the bottom of some foxhole begging his sky daddy to save his sorry ass while the fighting was going on.

We can fill the billets we'd gain from dropping the chaplains from the payroll with mental health professionals, who can provide real help to servicemembers suffering from mental health problems as a result of their service. The "help" jackasses like Bewley provide is useless.

  8. This is so depressing! ... so the whole point of the interview was to ridicule atheists? How loving, how charitable, how Christian ... how FOX!!

    - They seemed to relish the idea that the fear of sudden death turns atheists into believers. (Guess that might make war alright then, if it brings a few more lost sheep home to the loving father?) In that "god-forsaken" environment? What desperate propaganda! For all their demands for special privileges and to be respected, religions are incapable of respecting individual choice and the freedom to dissent.

This report made me think of the delight of the Inquisition in torturing people into recanting. With religion still parasitising our species we remain in the Dark Ages.

  9. According to the chaplin it's only the religious who fight in wars and kill people. Sounds about right.

  10. @jen peeples ... to resurrect a viet nam era trope: right on!

  11. "Thankful that they've been protected" We can safely assume he means by God. So what about the men and women who were killed and maimed? The protection has limits? Man you people are scary.

  12. What about the Viet Cong? What about all of the other "commies" that we have fought? Aren't they atheists?

  13. Geraldo's source is a professional liar-- quite literally. The chaplain's job is to promote and justify bullshit; they have not place on the public payroll.

What a pig headed statement to make and he has made it on the graves of all the fallen soldiers who had no religious faith. If I were a soldier standing in line for my food I would have taken my tray and chucked it into his face. And then asked for his portion as compensation for his disgusting remark.

  19. Wow. You know... Geraldo didn't have to ask that question.

Faux News could have made this report just another petty biased view of our troops overseas as a bunch of good-old-Easter-celebrating Christians doing their part on the international war on drugs, and if Geraldo didn't CHOOSE to ask that specific bullshit question, that's what it would have been. As much as I disdain Faux News, they didn't start the anti-atheist rhetoric... it was all on Geraldo Rivera.

  20. well there were so many who called BULLSHIT better than me,still had to add.

  21. as that was happening i had a vision of one of the soldiers jumping out of line and yelling "i'm an atheist!" lol, would've killed that moment for FOX. But of course, soldiers don't jump out of line, and FOX usually finds the perfect time to make atheists look bad. it was funny in my head though.

  22. Anyone would be thankful to be alive after going through what they have.

On the other hand, thankful to be protected implies that a special someone, or something, is watching over them. Apparently that special someone, or something, wasn't there when their buddy was maimed or killed. How do they reconcile that?

  23. I have known what it is to fear for your life, and I guarantee I had no desire for God at that moment. It's something that can't be easily tested, so believers like to say it.

  24. I'm a 20 year retired Air Force veteran ('85-'05), and have been an atheist longer than that. On any given Sunday morning in deployed locations in the Middle East, there would be more folks in the gym, rec center, dining hall, etc, than in the chapel. Few people ever used the word Atheist for fear of reprisal, but most people I knew were quite openly NOT religious.

I was an atheist in a foxhole in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

  27. I'm an atheist, and I wouldn't go in a foxhole, ever, not even if I was a believer.

    Just sayin'
