Al-Jazeera Special Programme - Dawkins on Religion
December 22, 2012 on Al-Jazeera English:
Fanaticism, fundamentalism, superstition and ignorance. Religion is getting a bad press these days. Much of the conflict in the world, from the Middle East to Nigeria and Myanmar, is often blamed on religion.
But how are things from a different perspective? Defenders of religion claim Adolf Hitler was an atheist. Communism under Joseph Stalin, Pol Pot or Mao Zedong banned religion, but also massacred millions. And science brought incredible and amazing advances, but also pollution and the atomic bomb.
A critic of religious dogmatism, Professor Richard Dawkins revolutionised genetics in 1976 with the publication of The Selfish Gene, which explained how evolution takes place at the genetic level. He has since written 12 more bestsellers, including The God Delusion which sold millions of copies, was translated into more than 30 languages, and catapulted him to the position of the world's foremost atheist.
Mehdi Hasan interviews evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins at the Oxford Union and asks: Is religion a force for good or evil? Can it co-exist with science? Is science the new religion? And why if god does not exist, is religion so persistent?

Pope Denounces Gay Marriage During Annual Christmas Address
From NYTimes:
Pope Benedict used his annual Christmas message to denounce gay marriage, saying that it destroyed the “essence of the human creature.”
In one of his most important speeches of the year, the Pope stressed that a person’s gender identity is God-given and unchangeable. As a result, he sees gay marriage as a “manipulation of nature.”

Parents Beat 7-Year-Old Son To Death For Not Reading The Bible
From HuffPo:
Police in Las Vegas allege that a 7-year-old boy was beaten to death by his parents after failing to read the Bible or do his homework.
Roderick "RJ" Arrington Jr., was admitted to an area hospital on Nov. 29 because he was unresponsive, according to the Las Vegas Sun. Personnel there called officers to the scene after they observed severe bruising and brain swelling, according to a police report. The boy died the following afternoon.
Police arrested the boy's mother, Dina Palmer, 27, and stepfather, Markiece Palmer, 34, and charged them with the murder of the boy. Investigators said that Palmer "stood by and let her husband" shake and beat the boy to death.
According to KLAS, the arrest report detailed "open abrasions on [Arrington's] buttocks, severe bruising to his thighs, marks and bruises on his back and shoulders and evidence of previous beatings."
Markiece Palmer stated the second grade student was spanked on Nov. 27 because he had lied about reading the Bible; he said the boy was also spanked the following day for not finishing his homework, according to police.

Scott Burdick Interviews Richard Dawkins
by Scott Burdick:
This is one of the dozens of interviews I did for a documentary on Reason that I'm currently editing. Because I'll only be able to use a small part of this interview in the documentary, I thought I'd put up the full interview on youtube since the conversation I had with Richard Dawkins was so interesting in its entirety.
Our dialogue was pretty free-flowing so doesn't have any overarching theme or direction, but was more akin to a back-and-forth chat one might indulge in over diner. I threw a few images in to add some visual fun, though they are only loosely related to what we discussed.
Interviewing this celebrated scientist and author was certainly a high point for me, personally, since Richard is one of the modern thinkers that have greatly influenced me since I first read his books "The Selfish Gene" and "The Blind Watchmaker" in High School and Art School. If only they were required reading, the critical thinking skills of our graduates would be honed to a sharper degree than is currently the case.

IQ2 - Science Refutes God - Full Debate
Lawrence Krauss & Michael Shermer vs. Ian Hutchinson & Dinesh D'Souza
From Intelligence Squared:
On the fundamental question--evolution or creation?--Americans are on the fence. According to one survey, while 61% of Americans believe we have evolved over time, 22% believe this evolution was guided by a higher power, with another 31% on the side of creationism. For some, modern science debunks many of religion's core beliefs, but for others, questions like "Why are we here?" and "How did it all come about?" can only be answered through a belief in the existence of God. Can science and religion co-exist?
