Psychic Kids: Children of the Paranormal - A&E TV

From Pharyngula:
The A&E Channel has a new show coming up: Psychic Kids: Children of the Paranormal. Sounds awful already, doesn't it? But it's worse than you think: they're looking for disturbed kids who think they've got magic powers, and then they're flying in "professional psychics" to coach them in dealing with their awesome powers, i.e., indulge their delusions, get off on feeling superior to unhappy kids, and collect a paycheck for psychic child abuse.

They're putting kids in the hands of a creepy skeevo like Chip Coffey, all for your entertainment.

  3. I really gag at that beatific pose he does at the end - he's so obviously consciously playing the part of the 'wise man' - it makes me want to vom.

  7. Sad thing is, he and those kids probably believe 100% that they have powers. Get James Randi onto them to make them see how deluded they are.

The phrase 'blind leading the blind' comes to mind.

  10. genuine question-is atheism and believing in some supernatural acts mutually exclusive?

  11. Creepy, creepy guy.

    Nell,

I'd say yes, as if you are defining an act or an aspect of the world as 'supernatural' you are saying that it exists outside of the laws which govern the rest of the universe.

We obviously haven't yet discovered what all of these laws are (and some we have discovered will probably have to be reconsidered), but the term 'supernatural' strongly implies that the acts in question  are simply not amenable to any present or future rational explanation.

I think such a view is not compatible with atheism, which rejects simple credulity and easy non-answers.

Also, belief in the supernatural is the ultimate intellectual laziness.

  12. So apparently they have the psychic power to manipulate tv ratings.

  13. agreed. on everything except the idea that it isn't compatible with atheism. i think nearly anything can be compatible with atheism, considering there are no core values or agreements we all have come to. 99% of us may agree to "reject credulity and easy non-answers", but that doesn't necessarily mean it's unsuitable with atheism.
