Christopher Hitchens and Tariq Ramadan Debate: Is Islam a Religion of Peace? Moderated by Laurie Goodstein.

With the Obama administration in its nascent years, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict proving as intractable as ever, relations with Iran reaching a boiling point and the political landscape changing rapidly both in the United States and the Middle East, wrestling with the issue of Islam is more crucial than ever and will be a defining feature of the 21st century. In the clip here, famous atheist and prolific author Christopher Hitchens and the accomplished and controversial scholar Tariq Ramadan debate one of the most pertinent questions of our modern age.

  1. They (the various faiths) all preach that they are the religion of peace, morality and civility. That of course is as nonsensicle as their various belief systems, but it does seem to be a desire adopted by the deluded. I suppose to be percieved as peaceful is a positive thing. All one need do though is look at the news. It's not buddists flying planes into buildings, it not crazed catholics or angry anglicans, it's islamic extremists. The left hand is preaching peace while the right hand is having a murderous old time. For the sake of real enduring peace, lets file religious superstitions away in a locked safe and throw away the key.
