Christine O'Donnell: Evolution is a Myth

September 24, 2010 on Real Time with Bill Maher
O'DONNELL: You know what, evolution is a myth. And even Darwin himself -

MAHER: Evolution is a myth? Have you ever looked at a monkey?

O'DONNELL: Well then, why they -- why aren't monkeys still evolving into humans
(Thanks Eric)

  3. On the contrary, the question is: why aren't humans evolving into monkeys?

  6. What's scary is that she took the standard creationist argument, put her own thought into it, and came up with that... Oy.

  7. "Even Darwin himself..." Damn, I wish she would have finished that little gem.

  8. "Even Darwin himself renounced evolution on his death bed" $500 says that sentence couldn't have ended any other way.

  9. A good example of how you should not even open your mouth in a converstion when you are ignorant and clueless about the subject matter.

So scary that this kind of ignorance can be in such powerful positions in the senate and goverment

  10. Bill is just as fucking stupid as she is---we don't come from monkeys--if we did, she'd be right with her argument.  Evolution is a web---not a linear model.  God, this country is stupid.

  11. Bill Hicks was right. The family tree for these people is a stump.

  12. Bill said: "Look at the monkey"
One of the most powerful arguments, barely used: Look at the monkeys.
Yes... We are close cousins. Look at them. Us and them...
Yet...I hardly hear that evidence being used in debates. LOOK AT THE MONKEYS!
    I wonder why?
If we were resembling, lets say: a deer or dolphin or, shark or King Charles Cavalier English Spaniel - would the evolution be COMMONLY accepted by all of the folks on earth?

  13. Well she's recanted her former witchcraft and former hard line views on sex.  Now of course she'll recant her view on evolution, right?  I mean this was back over ten years ago, so if she says she's since learned about evolution and accepted it as fact, then okay.  But if she DOESN'T do that, then... well then everything being said about her in this video discussion is dead on.

  14. Actually, cladistically speaking we are both apes AND monkeys (and mammals, and fish, and vertebrates, etc.).

Of course present day monkey didn't exist at the time our last common ancestor with them did, but neither did present day apes. Never the less, our LCA with monkeys could accurately be called a monkey. We certainly would if we saw one today.

  17. Many here obviously have the opinion that if you don't believe that 'evolution' (a very broad term that needs to be defined if you're going to converse intelligently about it) is true, then somehow you are mentally deficient. And that's about where almost all of you stop. I suspect very few of you actually know why you believe what you believe. You mostly just parrot what you've heard from others, and think that makes you intelligent somehow. And who's stupid?

  18. I doubt anyone here "believe" that evolution is true but I'm quite sure most (if not all) accept evolution as fact.
Now, if you'll change your perception from "believe evolution is true" to "accept evolution as fact", you'll understand why people who do, "look down" at people who don't.

What would you think of a person who doesn't believe apples fall from the tree to the ground?
