Congress Debates Biblical Stance on Immigration

July 21, 2010 on Fox News
From Texas Insider:
A congressional hearing last week featuring religious leaders turned into a debate about the Bible and whether it provides more backing to reform advocates or to those who favor tougher enforcement of existing laws.

“The Bible contains numerous passages that support the rule of law. The Scriptures clearly indicate that God charges civil authorities with preserving order, protecting citizens and punishing wrongdoers,” declared Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), a critic of immigration reform legislation.

“Ezekiel 47 details the promised land’s boundaries,” noted Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), another immigration reform opponent.

“I’m not a theologian,” Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) chimed in. “I didn’t come here with my Bible. I’m a good Catholic, you know. But I’ll tell you, I learned two things: to love God above everything else and to love my neighbor as I love myself.”

For supporters of strict church-state separation, the debate crossed a line but also demonstrated the perils of trying to use the Bible to set public policy.

  1. Pathetic! It must be remembered that most Democrats are religious and are not immune to arguments from holy books.  I think we're gradually losing the idea of reality based arguments about moral and political issues. When this hits the Supreme Court, we'll be a theocracy.

  2. It's not a new twist... they simply do not want to hear when they claim to be the moral majority and have pretty much hijacked religion to themselves.

  3. This is the epitome of how a theocracy works.  The "holy men" interjecting their interpretation of how "God's laws" need to be applied to a sovereign nation. Wewlcome to the United States of Jesusland -- and this ain't no amusement park.

  4. Wait....    “The Bible contains numerous passages that support the rule of law. The Scriptures clearly indicate that God charges civil authorities with preserving order, protecting citizens and punishing wrongdoers,”     Umm... apparently this doesn't count when the civil authorities approve same-sex marriage, right?

  5. this country was founded on the separation of church and state, the bible should not even be an issue when talking about laws!

  6. The founding fathers were athesists, masons, illuminati or some mixture. People often forget that the US right after revolution was home to many atheists and others that would be considered extreamly radical today,

  8. Very disturbing. I keep thinking of the quote from Sinclair Lewis -- "When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross."
