From Texas Freedom Network:
Even before the Texas State Board of Education took up its expected debate today over what students will learn about separation about church and state in their social studies classrooms, board member Cynthia Dunbar, R-Richmond, made her position clear. She offered the board’s opening prayer this morning and removed any doubt about what she and other far-right board members want students to learn: America’s laws and government should be based on the Christian Bible.(via Pharyngula)

So glad I'm not in high school
ReplyDeleteI will LMAO in the moment she says "the good book" if I was there.Like Eddy Murphy did when he was Professor Clump.
ReplyDeletewhy don't they read all the horrid muderous garbage in the good book. i am tired of the cherry picking
ReplyDeleteit's the "good" book, duh :)
ReplyDeleteit's the good* book
ReplyDelete-subject to cherry picking the good bits
Terrifying. Almost as much so as that Lars Vilks attack video. .....almost.
ReplyDeleteAlmost? Lars Vilks attacks i can just put away as beeing a bunch of idiots. This however is about the mainstream teaching of people. I think this will affect people more, not in a media sense but those involved, those who grow up learning this rubbish.
ReplyDeleteI disagree. It's these school board members who are just being a bunch of idiots. This is happening in Texas, the education of those kids is a lost cause anyway. In N.E. states like NY and VT we'll just buy the non-shit textbooks for a few extra $ each and continue giving kids a real education like we always have. The unhinged violent lunatics of the sort in that Vilks clip frighten me much more. Especially so when they enjoy the luxury of having their maniacal derangements coddled by being in a European country whose attitude toward freedom of speech is ambivalent at best as soon as someone shouts loud enough that they're being "oppressed and offended!!".
ReplyDeleteI hate it when people preach in their prayers.
ReplyDeleteWhich is all well and good until, in thirty years time, the kids being fed this garbage are themselves involved in government, education and the military. It doesn't take much for a society to drastically schism like a bad faith system, and miseducation is definitely a first step in that direction.
ReplyDeleteTexas is a bunch of god fearing Christian fools anyways. I wonder how much hate mail she recieved from this.
ReplyDeleteApparently, some of you are as ignorant about Texans as the school board is about the importance of separation of church & state. Texas children are not "a lost cause", nor are all Texans "a bunch of god fearing Christian fools". Sure, maybe some are, but cut the rest of us some slack! Over generalizing is silly, please stop and think before you insult (& look like schmucks).
ReplyDeleteGreg-I so agree! Is she praying to God, or talking to the audience/TV crew? Always drove me crazy when I was a churchgoer.

Is there any other reason for praying publically than to somehow preach or otherwise represent your own ideas as somehow more important than they really are?
ReplyDelete

Public prayer and preaching is even criticised in the bible by Jesus!

I was born and raised here in teksiz so I can say anything I want to. these poor folks are part of the political strcture here in tx. They are hanging on to a diminishing pool of voters. the local politicians are not good for anything other than to push the conservative-political agenda. texans are a prickly breed of people. they tend to vote the opposite of good sense just for the hell of it. just to go against the grain. i'm sure when they get out of their hard-headed mode they'll vote for their best interest.
