Father Knows Best: How to Discern Between Hallucination, Imagination, and the "Voice of God"?

  1. So if it the voice in your head tells you to do something against human reason ... hmmm. Like Abraham getting the message to sacrifice Isaac? Like that "Father"?

  3. it's hard to answer any question that you know you don't have a legitimate answer for. Basically he says anything good, God gets credit for. Anything bad...well, that's human fallacy and/or the devil. What a copout.

  4. This guy is lying on so many different levels that I would need to write a book to cover the low points. Nobody lies that much without being cognisant of it.

  5. Holy crap! That was my question they chose (the complexity one)!

His answer was ridiculous though, as expected. An all powerful, all knowing god is less complex than the material universe which is made up of unconcious matter? oh the irony...it hurts. I'm still glad they aired it.

  6. Far be it from me to praise father Morris, but I was pleasantly surprised with his answer to the question about biblical litteralism. In the past I've seen him struggle as a catholic who has to make his answers fit for a fundamentalist protestant viewing audience. But at least this answer was unabashedly liberal.

But yeah, his answer on the origins question was again completely facepalm-worthy. :-D

  7. I find it repetitive and un-funny that they continuously make fun of the weird robot presentation of questions. But I do understand why it's done, it makes the question easier to dismiss if they have a little chuckle before even adressing it.

Notice how he know about God though. More often it's "God is beyond human comprehension"

Not only that, but also: killing the people of Canaan. Once you add-in "killing the bad people" as something God might ask you to do, then you can see by killing abortion doctors might be "something that God says". Lots of Christians and Jews see Palestinians as impostors in the "Holy Land". It's not "generous" or "loving" to drive them out of Israel, but it seems to fit with the historical commands of "God".

I also thought about Bush's claim that God told him to invade Iraq in this context. Was that "generous" or "loving"?

There's also the problem that being generous might not always be what "God" would want you to do. Lots of US Christian/Republicans blame the poor for being poor, and call people "bleeding heart" liberals. I guess Father Morris would have to claim that "bleeding heart liberals" are better at "following God" than lots of Republicans who think they're Christians -- which would be quite a statement to make on FOX News.

Add-in a little bit of "God's ways are beyond our comprehension" and you can suddenly give up on trying to judge whether a particular action is "what God would tell you to do" because what seems "good" might lead to a bad outcome, and what seems evil might lead to some greater good (e.g. killing Adolf Hitler as an infant, or assassinating a leader who would make a bad decision for the country).

  11. I agree with Fr,

God is much simpler than this complex physical universe. That is because God is simply an imaginary character who created nothing but chaotic confusion that will see our end.

I think Fr is a closet atheist: "Don't read the bible as historic fact or as a scientific book".. and .. "The water won't make people sick.. not because it's blessed but because it's pure".

    Thanks Fr.

  13.
You are right, but this is also yet another great exposure into their poor ways of 'reasoning' and the disrespectful manner they treat people with valid questions which they can't really answer. I wonder how long it'll take before they'll realize they're exposing themselves like such fools and quit the 'robot' section all together. On the other hand they might be playing safe, after all at FOX 'news' fools are better secured to have jobs than the judicious minds.
