Danish Daily Appologises for Muhammad Cartoons

February 26, 2010 on Russia Today
A Danish newspaper's apologised for offending Muslims over its printing of a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad five years ago. It sparked fierce protest in the Muslim world and intense debate about freedom of speech. The Politiken newspaper says its apology was part of a settlement with a Saudi lawyer representing eight Muslim groups in the Middle East and Australia.

  3. Here's a little background info.

The infamous Mohammed cartoons were first commisioned and published by a Danish newspaper called Jyllandsposten. At that time the chief editor of another Danish newspaper called Politiken, Tøger Seidenfaden, said they wouldn't have published the cartoons and argued publically against Jyllandspostens reasons for doing so.

Despite of this, and much later, Tøger Seidenfaden decided to publish those cartoons anyway in Politiken, claiming there now was a legitimate reason to do so.

And this is what he's now apologizing for.

So this excuse is real cute, coming from this guy. To any outside observer it looks like "the Danes have caved in" when it's basically this guy, who objected to the cartoons being published in the first place, doing the "apologizing".

I am a reader of Politiken (can´t stand Jyllands Posten or pesten as they refer to it here) but I have to say Tøger Seidenfaden has to go in order for me to take this paper seriously again.

I think this a terrible move by Politiken (my grandfather´s old workplace). :(
