Bill Gates on Energy: Innovating to Zero! | TED

February 2010 on TED
At TED2010, Bill Gates unveils his vision for the world's energy future, describing the need for "miracles" to avoid planetary catastrophe and explaining why he's backing a dramatically different type of nuclear reactor. The necessary goal? Zero carbon emissions globally by 2050.

  1. Huh. Bill Gate's trademark at TED is releasing bugs into the world. It's like he never left Microsoft!

    Seriously, a great talk.

  2. If what Thomas Homer Dixon says is true we either do what Gate's also says or the world's population right around 2050 will start to get much smaller with massive wide spread crop failure.

But, hey, at least its population control.... :S

  3. why hasn't ted posted sam harris 2010 talk? i've heard good things. the moral landscape. mmm.

  4. TO zero? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA has he lost his mind?

  5. I follow nuclear reasearch and reactor research VERY closely and I've never heard this concept of a 'traveling wave reactor' before today. It's intriguing to say the least.,%20author%20proof.pdf

  6. @1:23, has that graph been adjusted for inflation? The dollar in 1900 was worth a lot more than it is today!

  7. What do you think is the most likely? :|

  8. Many institutions limit access to their online information. Making this information available will be an asset to all.

  9. To be perfectly honest, I would think that the value of the dollar going down over time is essentially what makes the technological boom... go... well... boom... It is also what makes our lives "better"... I agree inflation adjustments should be made but the fact that more households can afford energy in itself is a testament that energy has in fact become cheaper.
