13-Year-Old Saudi Girl Sentenced to 90 Lashes and Jail For Bringing a Cell Phone to School

January 21, 2010 on CNN with Jack Cafferty
From Daily Mail:
A 13-year-old Saudi schoolgirl is to be given 90 lashes in front of her classmates after she was caught with a mobile camera phone.

The girl, who has not been named, was also sentenced to two months in jail by a court in the eastern city of Jubail.

She had assaulted her headmistress after being caught with the gadget which is banned in girl schools, said Al-Watan, a Saudi newspaper. The kingdom's use of such punishments has been widely condemned by human rights organisations.

Three years ago 16 schoolchildren, aged between 12 and 18, were each sentenced to between 300 and 500 lashes for being aggressive to a teacher.

  2. Well, our U.S. teenage girls would certainly have trouble adapting over there.

Honestly...WTF. I hate being reminded that many parts of the world still live in the dark ages. Just one more cruel example why the world would be a better place without dogmatic religion.

  3.
Yeah, lashing defenseless little girls and putting them in jail for a couple of months, that's the religion-of-peace-way-to-go (Sharia) already. God's will faithfully executed by the ill minded little helper mobs, of course. All(ah) shall burst of pride again!

In reply to CNN's question: Yet another damn good reason to stop being so dependent of oil, one might think. And ignoring the fact everywhere Sharia rules these kinds of horrific practices are everyday reality, should've never been an option anyhow.

  4. Was she lashed for the cell phone or assulting her headmaster?

  5.
Don't expect to find much if any logics in such cases anyway, in Sharia Land the mere existence of a girl is enough for Allah's demolition squads God-fearing-people "being assaulted". But you don't need to worry, this little girl has learned her lesson and she'll be sorry all right (for being born, wrong place wrong time).

  6. "90 lashes in front of her classmates "

Spreading terror around will surely do wonders for piety.

  7. I'm native to Saudi Arabia (sadly.) For those curious why cell phones are banned in girls' schools and NOT boys' ... the claim is that girls can be photographed while not fully covered. It's absurd to say the least. Even non-religious girls guard their photos because this system has created a situation that's often exploited for blackmail and the repercussions for that are very serious.

The country is ruled by mentally deranged men, what other outcome does one expect!

  9. It does matter, cafferty said three or four times "a 13 year old girl was given 90 lashes for bringing a cell phone to school" it's totally misrepresenting the truth.

Know don't get me wrong, it's discusting and horrific for anyone to get that punishment even for assaulting a (probably large male) headmaster, but they're still putting a yellow spin on the story

  10. 90 Lashes probably WILL kill her.

  11. I admire Cafferty for doing this kind of report. He seems about ready to explode with outrage yet he's able to contain it and get the story out. It's really important to get the story out instead of just doing what I'd be tempted to do: "Look at these rotten sons-of-bitches.....bastards.......stinkin' up the planet".

  12. OMG what a fabricaters of the truth

  13. Saudi, Perhaps she is 21 as the Arabic link you've provided states and perhaps she did indeed assault her teacher. I think most here are appalled at the form of punishment. Public lashing serves no purpose but humiliation and subjects the viewers to unnecessary violence. Research has affirmed time and again these methods don't work as deterrents, and further cause harm. Examine what outsiders who understand this see when they hear of PUBLIC LASHING.

It is relevant here... Islam advocates an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, doesn't it? What the Saudi government sees as justice, people here see as retaliatory retribution motivated by religion.

  14.
First of all CNN reported about a 13 (not 12) year old girl. Secondly, your link might be fabricated by Sabq News, a Saudi Arabian news website, why should I assume this is a more reliable, non prejudiced source? Also hearing specific people involved telling it's all exaggerated and the truth is distorted just to cover their own asses and reputations, wouldn't be a first either.
