Scientists: US doomed if creationist president elected

From AFP:
A day after ordained Baptist minister Mike Huckabee finished first in the opening round to choose a Republican candidate for the White House, scientists warned Americans against electing a leader who doubts evolution.

"The logic that convinces us that evolution is a fact is the same logic we use to say smoking is hazardous to your health or we have serious energy policy issues because of global warming," University of Michigan professor Gilbert Omenn told reporters at the launch of a book on evolution by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS).

"I would worry that a president who didn't believe in the evolution arguments wouldn't believe in those other arguments either. This is a way of leading our country to ruin," added Omenn, who was part of a panel of experts at the launch of "Science, Evolution and Creationism." Read more

  1. I agree that it would be bad to have a elect a president that buys the intelligent design nonsense this year, but it is more important to elect someone who will stand up to Islamic terrorism. Even if Huckabee is elected this year it is unlikely that creationism would be introduced into the schools, look what happened in Dover. Although I hope we get someone who is proscience elected this year, if it comes down to Huckabee and any of the dems, I will vote for Huckabee.

  2. I am reminded of those days when the best minds in the world took refuge in US when Hitler rose to power.. and since then US has had a monopoly on scientific advancement.

I would be glad if US turns into a anti-scientific nation because the rest of the world will get all its minds back.. and balance will be restored.

  3. Intelligent design does not intelligently explain the way life is in the first place, because it is just plain assumption. Any normal intelligent people would know that the evolutionary way of explaining things is so much more factual and evidence-based than to rely on pure assumption from the new and ridiculous discipline of the evolved religious or pseudo-religious-science dogma, creationism.

America needs a true and competent leader, not a pastor.. or a Jesus Freak.. a Jesus a$$hole rather..

Oh yea, Bush is an Idiot. Huckabee might be the next stupidoid. We'll never know.

And edwin, i agree with you man... if the US turns completely anti-science and pro-faith, the rest of the world would get to rise up sooner or later. The US then, would be known as one of the most stupid nation ever in history for embracing creationism fallacies.
